CHILE: Frei case further damages Pinochet's legacy

The president of the senate, Eduardo Frei Ruiz-Tagle, expressed for the first time publicly this week his conviction that his father, former president Eduardo Frei Montalva, did not die of natural causes but was murdered. He was speaking at a ceremony commemorating the 25th anniversary of his father's death on 22 January: the next day he filed a murder charge. Days earlier a laboratory at the Belgian university of Ghent released a preliminary report showing that traces of mustard gas were found in tissue samples taken from Frei's body.
